Wilderness State Park

The girls and I camped up in Wilderness State Park and visited the UP from September 5-8, 2019.

It took us about 5 hours to drive to Wilderness with two stops along the way – one for Culvers for lunch and one for gas. We set up camp and then drove West to Waugoshance Point and walked around a bit by some bird nesting areas that they had and along Lake Michigan. We could see the bridge from a distance.

We had tacos in hobo pie makers for supper and had a fire.

It was cloudy and a little rainy much of Friday. We had breakfast in the pop-up and then drove across the bridge to Sault Ste Marie. We had Subway for lunch there and then visited the Soo Locks visitor center and watched a few boats go through the locks.

After the locks we headed to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. We went to the Lower Falls first and looked at those and then did a short hike there.

After the Lower Falls we drove to the Upper Falls and checked those out.

On our way out of the Upper Falls area we stopped at the Tahquamenon Brewery and ate supper and I bought Nicolynn a sweatshirt from the shop since she needed a new one. Since we were close to Whitefish Point we headed there before heading back to the campground just to see it. There was some sort of Shipwreck Museum, but it was closed by the time we got there. We walked the shore by Lake Superior for a few minutes.

It was cloudy when we went to sleep Friday night, but I woke up at 2:30am and it was clear, so I put the girls in the car and we drove to the dark sky viewing area to look at the stars. It was a great clear view of the night sky with lots of stars visible!

It was a nicer day than Friday so after breakfast we walked to the South side of the main park drive and did a hike through the woods. It was a bit buggy and I got several bug bites. Nicolynn found a frog, toad, and a snake. By the time we were finished hiking we were all very hot since it had warmed up quite a bit.

After the hike we had lunch and then drove to Mackinaw City for the afternoon. We took some pictures by the bridge, visited the shops, went through a 3D glass maze room, watched some fudge being made, and bought some fudge and chocolates.

After Mackinaw City we headed back and ate more tacos on the fire for our last night.

We pretty much just packed up and headed home right after breakfast. It took us about 4h15m with one gas+bathroom stop. Before we even got out of the state park I had some dash lights on my car which I was told Monday when I brought it in was for a faulty ground strap, so that was thankfully a relatively inexpensive thing to fix. No car problems other than that and towing went well. We drove for probably at least 820 miles or so!
