Brew 46 – Goldilocks (Imperial IPA)

    • 6.0 oz Crystal 10L

    • 1.0oz CTZ 13.90% dry hop 15 days
    • 1.0oz Centennial 9.10% dry hop 14 days
    • 1.0oz Simcoe 12.30% dry hop 14 days
    • 0.25oz CTZ 13.90% dry hop 4 days
    • 0.25oz Centennial 9.10% dry hop 4 days
    • 0.25oz Simcoe 12.30% dry hop 4 days

Similar to #44. Increased dextrose from 1.25 to 1.75 lb. I used less Crystal 10 and more Carapils in the hope to make the color lighter and make the taste slightly less malty. The brew store only had one Safale US-05 in stock so I only used one. I used the Pliny Hop Pack from Farmhouse Brewing.

Notes:

  • Filled tap water (cold) to 1/2” below rivets. It was 48°F.
  • Put cover on and used largest burner on HI.
  • 15 min: 89°.
  • 32 min: 130°.
  • 41 min: 152°.
  • 47 min: 164°.
  • Turned off flame and steeped grains for 30 min.
  • 145° after 30 min. of steeping.
  • Removed grain and turned burner back on to HI.
  • 213° after 30 min
  • Boil (~218°) after ~35 min
  • Killed heat, added sugars
  • Back to boil, added 90 min. hops, started 90 min timer
  • At 45 min, added 45 min hops
  • At 30 min, added 30 min hops
  • At 10 min, added whirlfloc tablet
  • At 0 min, added 0 min hops
  • Started chiller.
  • After 7 minutes, turned off chiller. 74°.
  • Original gravity measured with hydrometer in boiling pot before transferring to fermenting bucket at 1.069.
  • Transferred to primary fermenting bucket.
  • Pitched yeast (1x Safale US-05).
  • No bubbles yet at ~10 hours.
  • After 4 days in primary, added 1st dry hop packet.
  • After 10 days, added 2nd dry hop packet.
  • After 4 days, kegged. A sample tasted pretty good, even warm and uncarbonated!
  • This one turned out quite good, but still not as clear or crisp as I’d prefer.
  • Primary: 4+10+4 days
  • OG: 1.069 @ 74
  • FG: 1.006 @ 71
