Brew 23 – Pumpkin Spice Ale

Based on #14 but with a few small changes.

  • Steeped Grains
    • 1.0 lb Munich
    • 0.5 lb Crystal 80L
    • 0.5 lb Carapils/Dextrin
  • Additions
    • 2 large + 1 small cans (73 oz total) of Canned Pumpkin (60 min)
      • The 2 large cans were Meijer Brand, and the small can was Libby’s
    • 7.8 lb Light LME (60 min)
    • 10 min: 2.5 tsp Cinnamon
    • 10 min: 1.5 tsp Nutmeg
    • 10 min: 1.25 tsp Allspice
  • Hops
    • 60 min: 1 oz Northern Brewer
    • 30 min: 1 oz US Goldings
  • Misc
    • 10 min: Irish Moss / Whirlfloc
  • Yeast
    • Safale US-05 Dry Ale Yeast

I added a little more water before steeping so I would not lose as much volume as last time. But, I also poured a little hot water over the steeped grains after steeping. Unfortunately after adding the pumpkin and sugar the volume was too high to safely boil so I removed a little bit off the top before beginning the boil. This probably contributed to the lower original gravity. The brew store did not have U.K. W.G.V. hops so I am trying US Goldings instead. I also used a different yeast.
